Overview
The field of omics is a rapidly evolving and multi-disciplinary one that encompasses genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, and metabolomics. Each of these individual fields offers the possibility to understand biological systems in a way that was previously unthinkable.

Epigenomics is the study of epigenetic modifications (chemical tags) marking the DNA of a cell. These modifications can affect gene expression and cellular function without altering the underlying DNA sequence. Research has demonstrated how epigenomics plays a critical role in monitoring a person's biological state and wellbeing. 

Pyrosequencing is a method of DNA sequencing by synthesis, providing quantitative real-time data. In addition to detecting sequence mutations, it can also identify the epigenetic marker, DNA methylation. The development of analytical techniques such as pyrosequencing and next generation sequencing has elevated the speed of biomarker discovery and prognostic indicators.

This course will introduce you to the field of epigenomics and its applications. Attendees will gain an understanding of the principles of pyrosequencing when applied to epigenetic studies.

Aims

The broad aims of the course are to:
  • Introduce the basics of epigenetics
  • Explore epigenetics investigations in omics laboratories
  • Outline the key principles and applications of pyrosequencing technology  
  • Understand the application of epigenomics in biomarker discovery

Who is the course for?

Biological and biomedical scientists who wish to learn genomics skills and how to refine and apply them. Knowledge of genetics at RQF Level 5 (undergraduate level) or equivalent is required, and the purpose of the course is to offer a practical point of access to these techniques in a practical user-friendly form.

Learning outcomes

By the end of the course, you will have achieved the following learning outcomes: 
Knowledge and understanding
  1. Analyse the concepts of genomics and epigenomics and apply them in clinical practice. 
  2. Understand the concept and principle of pyrosequencing technology.
  3. Critically analyse sequencing data.
  4. Epigenetics biomarker discovery in understanding disease pathology.

Skills, qualities and attributes
  1. Learn genomics technologies and able to apply them appropriately to investigate a disease diagnosis and prognosis.

Course tutors

The course will be run by Dr Aparna Duggirala. Aparna is a Molecular Biologist with over 20 years of experience working in a number of different aspects of molecular biology and clinical genetics. Aparna's research career centres around investigating the molecular link between lifestyle factors and metabolic health. She has an established track record in research on lifestyle factors and metabolic health. The key findings from her research include “Identification of methylation patterns in type 2 diabetes susceptibility genes between Indians and European”, “Differences in smoking associated patterns in south Asians and Europeans”, “Systematic identification of genetic influences on methylation across the human life course”, “Metabolomic markers associated with successful weight loss treatments”.

As an independent faculty researcher, Aparna currently designs and directs research projects in the area of metabolic health recovery by using genomics and epigenomics technologies. With expertise in research and research-informed teaching, Aparna supports the Biomedical Science research theme at University of Derby as Lead of Genomics in the facility of OMICS research in metabolism.

Technical skills and continuing professional development

This practical based course contributes to the RSB Technical Skills certificate, which can support applications to our professional registers. 

This course is approved for purposes of CPD, and attendees will receive a certificate of attendance and 9 CPD points.
