The course will take place online, with two sessions of two hours, 12:00 to 14:00 on 22 and 23 June 2026.

Overview

The field of omics is a rapidly evolving and multi-disciplinary one that encompasses genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, and metabolomics. Each of these individual fields offers the possibility to understand biological systems in a way that was previously unthinkable.

Metabolomics is the study of small molecules (metabolites) within a biological system and plays a critical role in monitoring a person's biological state and wellbeing. The development of analytical techniques such as High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) and mass spectrometry (MS) has elevated metabolomics to use in multiple disciplines, from industrial drug monitoring to environmental toxicology.

This course will introduce you to metabolomics, cover the key principles of HPLC and mass spectrometry, and outline the applications of metabolomics in personalised medicine and research. Attendees will gain an understanding of method development and how to apply metabolomics to their own research.

This course is part of the Techniques in Omics series delivered in partnership with University of Derby. You can choose to attend any or all of these courses, and will receive an attendance certificate for each course you attend. Discounts are available for those who would like to book all five courses. The courses in this series are:

Aims

The broad aims of the course are to:
  • Outline the fundamentals of metabolomics, why it is an important skill for research and how it is applied across bioscience and medical research
  • Introduce the key equipment and techniques of metabolomics
  • Provide an understanding of HPLC-MS applications
  • Provide a broad understanding of metabolomics in research and medicine

Who is the course for?

Biologists who wish to learn about targeted metabolomics using HPLC and mass spectrometry. No prior knowledge of metabolomics techniques will be required.

Learning outcomes

By the end of the course, you will have achieved the following learning outcomes: 
Knowledge and understanding
  1. Explain the principles and applications of -omics.
  2. Analyse the concepts of metabolomics and be able to apply them in practice. 
  3. Understand the basics of mass spectrometry and HPLC.
  4. Understand future development in drug discovery, treatment, and personalised medicine in the field of metabolomics.
Skills, qualities and attributes
  1. Learn mass spectrometry and HPLC techniques in the field of metabolomics. 
  2. Understand HPLC column efficiency and peak separation for method development.
  3. Understand metabolomics in personalised medicine.

Course tutors

The course will be run by Dr Jinit Masania. Jinit has extensive experience in investigating the role of metabolomics in metabolic/vascular diseases and identifying health markers using mass spectrometry. He was part of a large-scale (£10 million) integrating research project funded by the European Commission through its Seventh Framework Programme. The BIOCLAIMS (BIOCLAMS, Grant agreement no. 244995) project attempts to identify new "biomarkers" of the effects of food and food components on health, based on new biological technologies, in particular those of nutrigenomics and metabolomics that would contribute scientific bases for the reshaping of the European Legislation on "Health claims made on food". He has vast experience in using Liquid Chromatography Mass Spectrometry in transitional medicine, drug therapeutic and flux metabolomics. He obtained a PGCertHE and teaches across many modules across the Biomedical Science, Human Biology and Forensic Science programmes at University of Derby. 

He is a member of the Royal Society of Chemistry and executive member of Midland Mass Spectrometry Group and works with the Royal Society of Biology as a part of a team that accredits university degrees.

Technical skills and continuing professional development

This practical based course contributes to the RSB Technical Skills certificate, which can support applications to our professional registers. 

This course is approved for purposes of CPD, and attendees will receive a certificate of attendance and 12 CPD points.
