Biology Week: Rocket Revolution, Safer Orbit: A Biomimicry STEM Challenge
This STEM Challenge is a hands-on interdisciplinary workshop in which students explore how biological structures can inspire solutions to real engineering problems in space.

When? Thursday 8 October 2026, 5pm to 7:30pm
Where? Çukurova Science and Art Center, Adana, Turkey
Working in teams, students will investigate the challenge of containing fragments that may be produced when a spacecraft component fails. They will first design and test their own protective housing solutions. They will then explore the extraordinary structure of the diabolical ironclad beetle, focusing on how its interlocking body connections, rounded geometries and controlled deformation help it withstand extreme mechanical loads.
Using these biological principles as inspiration, students will redesign their prototypes and test them again. They will compare the performance of their original and biomimicry-inspired designs using measurable data such as joint opening and fragment retention.
The workshop brings together biology, biomimicry, space sustainability, engineering, physics and mathematics, allowing students to experience how observations from the natural world can be translated into technological design.
This activity is also part of a wider workshop series and is registered as an official World Space Week 2026 event under the theme “Rocket Revolution”.
