A pre-Biology Week CPD webinar for teachers, exploring how to set up and run a Journal Club in your school
Join our science teacher led CPD webinar in the run up to our Biology Week 2026, and kick start your own school Journal Club.
A Journal Club for students aged 14-19 (KS4, KS5 and all equivalents), is a discussion group where participants read, analyse and discuss scientific research articles. It provides an opportunity for students to explore real-world science beyond the curriculum, develop critical thinking skills, evaluate scientific evidence, and build confidence in communicating scientific ideas.
Science Journal Clubs support several Gatsby Benchmarks by introducing students to higher-level academic study, and developing employability skills, such as critical thinking and communication.

Our aim is for webinar attendees to create their own school Journal Clubs during Biology Week (8-18 October 2026), connecting with and learning from fellow science teachers across the globe.

- What a Journal Club is, and how it works.
- Practical strategies for running a successful Journal Club.
- Key considerations and tips to help you get started.
- Effective questions to encourage discussion and critical thinking.
- The skills and experiences students can gain from participating.
- Ways to make your Journal Club fun, inclusive, interactive, and engaging for all students.

This webinar is suitable for science teachers who teach students aged 14-19 (KS4, KS5 and all equivalents) in English, both in the UK and overseas.
