Building Employability in the Biosciences through Authentic Summer Studentships.

HUBS Learning & Teaching Workshop Series 2026

This workshop explores how employability can be embedded within the biosciences curriculum through authentic, practice-based learning, with a particular focus on summer studentships and project-based opportunities.

In a competitive graduate labour market, biosciences students need more than subject knowledge alone. This session examines how structured research and applied projects, including internally and externally funded studentships, can enhance employability, strengthen self-efficacy, and build core professional and research skills.

We will consider the wider employability pipeline and share practical, scalable approaches that help students connect theory to practice and gain meaningful experiential learning opportunities aligned with employer expectations. The workshop will also provide space to share innovative and inclusive practice in response to increasing emphasis on graduate outcomes and employability metrics.
A final focus will be on widening access opportunities with discussion of strategies to improve participation for students facing financial or structural barriers.
