A Workshop by The Bioscience Awarding Gap (BAG) Network.

Details

When? Wednesday 20 May 2026, 09:30 to 13:00

A Workshop by The Bioscience Awarding Gap (BAG) Network.

The Bioscience Awarding Gap (BAG) Network - an advisory group to the Heads of University Biosciences (HUBS) that promotes communication, discussion and the adoption of practices shown to reduce demographic awarding gaps in the biosciences - is hosting a meeting on 20 May 2026 titled “Breaking the Link: Cash, Class and Bioscience Awarding Gaps”. This session will explore practical ways to address socioeconomic awarding gaps within bioscience education. These gaps are often highlighted in university Access and Participation Plans as IMD Awarding Gaps (Index of Multiple Deprivation).

Attendees will hear about a range of approaches and interventions, including:
  • Supporting first‑generation students
  • Supporting commuting students
  • Teaching and supporting students who work part‑time
  • Fresh approaches to financial support
  • Levelling the placement playing field
  • Conversations about class and culture

We are delighted to confirm that Professor Steve Jones (University of Manchester) will deliver the keynote address.
