Plastic Pollution and the Liver: An Emerging Public Health Crisis

Talk outline

Plastic debris is now ubiquitous in the air-we-breathe, the water-we-drink, the food-we-eat, and micro- and nanoplastics are increasingly being reported within human organs, including the liver. The sharp rise in global plastic pollution has mirrored a worldwide surge in chronic liver disease, raising questions about causality.

Drawing on emerging clinical, environmental, and mechanistic studies, this lecture will explore how plastic particles enter the body, interact with liver tissue, and may contribute to inflammation, metabolic dysfunction, and fibrosis.

Professor Chokshi will introduce the concept of Plastic-Induced Liver Injury and explain why micro- and nanoplastics represent an emerging frontier in liver research.

About our speaker

Professor Shilpa Chokshi FRSB is Director of the Centre of Environmental Hepatology at the University of Plymouth. She is pioneering the understanding of how environmental exposures, particularly micro- and nanoplastics, contribute to liver disease.

Her research programme investigates the mechanisms through which plastic pollutants contribute to liver injury and disease progression, using advanced human liver models and multidisciplinary collaborations spanning environmental science, toxicology and public health.

She has led major national and international consortia, published extensively on immune dysfunction in liver disease, and is committed to translating emerging evidence into clinical awareness, public health policy and environmental intervention.

Who should attend?

This talk would be of interest to scientists, students, and those interested in hepatology, pollution and one health.
