Introduction to C. elegans, September 2026
Learn techniques for using C. elegans in research, including culture, behavioural assays and genetics.

Details

When? Wednesday 23 September 2026, 09:00 to 17:00
Where? University of Derby, Derby, England, UK
CPD Approved This event is approved for CPD

* This course contributes to the Royal Society of Biology's Technical Skills Certificate

Course location: University of Derby, Derby, England, UK

Timings: Day 1 (13:00 - 16:00), Day 2 (09:00 - 17:00)
Booking includes includes afternoon refreshments and dinner on Day 1, and morning and afternoon refreshments with a buffet lunch on Day 2. Attendees will have the opportunity to network and troubleshoot their research with others in the field.

Overview

The nematode, C. elegans, has been used as a model in all aspects of scientific research, from genetics and developmental biology to mechanistic discovery, neurobiology and neurocognition.
Over the course of the next 3 sessions, participants will learn a few basic but key techniques that will enable them to incorporate the C. elegans model in their research. These techniques include:
  • Basic nematode culture (agar and buffer preparation, E. coli lawns and maintenance of stocks)
  • Assessing nematode sensation of mechanical and chemical stimuli, e.g. chemotaxis
  • Applications of chemotaxis assays
  • Assessing longevity
  • PCR analysis of nematodes (including RNA extraction)

Aims

The broad aims of the course are for attendees to:
  • Have a greater understanding of the basic principles of C. elegans research.
  • Be proficient in basic C. elegans methods.
  • Understand how the nematode model can be utilised in their own research.

Who is the course for?

Biological and medical researchers who wish to learn how to utilise C. elegans within their research, or those with a general interest in learning more about this model. No prior knowledge of C. elegans techniques or microbiology will be required, and the purpose of the course is to offer an introductory point of access to these techniques in a practical user-friendly form.

Learning outcomes

Knowledge and understanding
  • Understand the diverse applications of the C. elegans model in the fields of biological and medical research.
  • Learn the basic principles and characteristics of the nematode model.
  • Learn and understand basic nematode culture protocols.
  • Learn and understand core behavioural assays that can be used with C. elegans.
  • Understand the genetic applications of the C. elegans model and methods to assess this.
Skills, qualities, and attributes
  • Learn core techniques of C. elegans research and be able to apply them to bespoke research projects.

Course tutor

The course will be run by Dr. Roshita Edward. Roshita is currently a Lecturer in Biomedical and Clinical Sciences at the University of Derby.  Roshita has been utilising the C. elegans model with her research for over 5 years, applying the model to research associated with healthy aging, addiction, neurodegeneration and metabolic disorders.
