Most fungi are harmless or even beneficial to humans, but some are deadly
There are far more fungi than plants. Most are harmless or positively useful to humans - all of them are aesthetically beautiful organisms. A very few species are extremely dangerous threats to human health, and these cause more deaths globally than malaria and approximately the same as HIV or TB. Why have you never heard that before?
Speaker biographyProfessor Neil Gow is deputy vice-chancellor for research and impact and professor of microbiology at the University of Exeter. Professor Gow was appointed in September 2018. He has had a lifelong research investigating the fungi that cause life threatening human disease and trying to find ways to diagnose and treat these infections. He has acted as president of four international societies of mycology and microbiology and is a passionate advocate for his community of medical mycologists - a field in which Exeter are world leaders and have the largest number of researchers in the UK.
